I have endeavoured to transcribe all the headstones in the graveyard. The following headstone inscriptions were recorded prior to December 2009. This section will be updated periodically.

There are other burials over the years in this graveyard and they are unmarked – without headstone or acknowledgement.

Notes relating to the older burials in the graveyard will be added and there is a section for information relating to burials where there appear to be no headstone. Extracts from local newspapers have been with the consent of the Belfast News Letter, Ulster Star, Belfast Telegraph and Irish News.

Notes: In 1911 census Carlile Arnold aged 70, a farmer and his wife Jane aged 60 years resided at Ballydonaghy with son Hans aged 31 and farm servant James Skelton, a Roman Catholic aged 30 years. Carlile and Jane were married 41 years in 1911 and had a total of 11 children of whom 9 were still alive.

Notes: In the 1911 census Hans Arnold is listed in the town land of Ballydonaghy. He is residing with his father and mother – Carlile and Jane. They had been married 41 years and had 11 of a family of whom 9 survived in 1911.

Notes: In the 1911 Census John Alexander Canning, clergyman aged 51 was residing with his wife Agnes Dickie Canning, aged 43 at Crumlin. They had been married 17 years and had four children, with 4 surviving. Agnes Dickie Canning had been born in England. Their children were listed as Charles Colquhoun Canning age 16, Janet Baird Canning age 15, Marion Spottiswood Bertram Canning aged 12 and John Lindsay Ferguson Canning age 7. A Roman Catholic servant Sarah Elizabeth Josephine Cooley aged 25 resided with the Canning family.

Notes: 1911 Census Ballynadrentagh.
Thomas Jamieson Coburn age 37, a farmer and his wife Anna Maria age 37 were married 11 years. Thomas was born in County Down. They had 8 children all of whom survived. Elizabeth age 10, David age 9, Margaret age 6, John age 5, Anna Maria age 4, Robert C. age 3, Mary age 2 and Susan age 1 month. Thomas Coburn’s mother, Mary aged 83 resided with the family.

Dodds. In loving memory of Frederick William Dodds. Crumlin, who died 16th December, 1942 aged 58 years. Also his wife Phoebe who died 12th September 1970. Their son-in-law John Armour who died 4th May 1982 and his wife Mary Elizabeth who died 6th May 1997.

Notes: In the 1911 census this family were listed at Ballytromery, Main Street, Crumlin. Frederick William Dodds age 27 years was a registered druggist, born in County Down. His wife Pheobe aged 27 had been born in County Tyrone. In 1911 they had been married 2 years with no children.

Doyle. In loving memory of my dear daughter Winifred E. (Winnie) Griffiths, who died 29th January 1945 also my dear daughter Margaret (Peggy) who died 18th January 1958 also their dear mother Eliza who died 30th December 1968 also her dear daughter Muriel who died 10th April 1970. Ever remembered.

Notes: In the 1911 census George Duncan age 66, a farmer and his wife Annabella age 60 are listed with 2 children Robert Matthew age 19 and James A. age 17, and a domestic Isabella hull age 29. George and his wife had been married 20 years and are both listed as Church of Ireland.

Eakin. In loving memory of my dear parents John Meiklejohn died 14th March 1944. Mary Ann died 8th June 1944. Also a devoted husband and father John Eakin who died 5th May 1967. Also a dear wife and our devoted mother Jemina Steedman Eakin who died 20th February 1971.

Notes: In the 1911 census this family (Meiklejohn) were listed at Mill Street, Crumlin. They were all born in Scotland. John Meiklejohn is listed as a power loom turner. In 1911 they were married 20 years, had 3 children, one of whom was living.

Erskine. Erected to the memory of Gilbert Erskine, Ballyquillan died 16th September, 1935, aged 74 years. Also his wife Matilda A. Erskine, died 29th December, 1948, aged 80 years also their son R.J. Harper Erskine died 30th September, 1979 aged 77 years. Ellen Y. Erskine, wife of Harper died 12th June, 1979 aged 68 years.

Fleming. In loving memory of James Fleming, died 8th Feb. 1934. His son James died 28th Feb. 1948. His wife Jemima, died 28th June 1969, their daughter Margaret Douds died 19th Feb. 1978, also Jane Fleming, died 11th April 1985 also William Douds, died 28th Nov. 1995. And James Fleming, died 9th Jan. 1997. At rest.

J. Gillen Rifleman, Royal Irish Rifles no 571 died 19 03 1921 was the son of Mrs Agnes McCormick, of 4 Helen Street, Crumlin.

The 1911 Census shows John Gillen living at Helen Street, Ballydonaghy, Crumlin.
Joseph McCormick, age 47, Woollen weaver, married 10 years, 2 children, 1 surviving resides with his wife Agnes McCormick age 40. Their sons are listed as John Gillen age 12 and Harry McCormick aged 9. Sarah Andrews, mother in law of Joseph McCormick age 70, Robert McCormick age 38 and James McCormick age 30, both woollen weavers are also residing in this house.

Gordon. In loving memory of our dear sons John Lindsay Gordon died 12th August 1957, aged 22 years. Stanley Richard Gordon, died 9th September 1933, aged 2 years also their father Samuel Gordon died 4th November 1966 and their mother Elizabeth Eileen Gordon died 7th November 1992.

Catherine Hamilton, aged 66 a farmer was a widow residing with 3 sons James age 35, Alexander age 33 and David age 30.

Harkness who died 24th November, 1912 aged 80 years. John Harkness McBratney, 14th Batt, Royal Irish Rifles, Y.C.V. killed in action in France 29th April 1918. 1914 – 1918.

Gilbert Robb Harkness died 7th March 1935 aged 63 years. Gilbert John Harkness of Mooreview died 30th November 1993 aged 75 years and his wife Marjorie Neill died 30th August 2004. Blessed are the dead which died in the Lord. Rev. XIV. 13. Thy will be done. My peace I give unto you. It is finished John XIX. 30.

Walter Oakman Hume elder son of the above born 24th June 1852 died 17th January 1893 at Collingwood, Australia. Walter Oakman Hume KC LLB only son of George Alexander Hume KC LLD born 8th September 1890 died 30th June 1939.

Hume – January 9 at his residence, Crumlin, George Alexander Hume, M.D., coroner, aged 60 years. Interment to take place in Crumlin Burying-ground, on Tuesday morning, at eleven o’clock.

The Vacant Coronership in County Antrim.

The death of Dr. Hume, of Crumlin, causes a vacancy in the County Coroners of Antrim; and it is very generally known that Dr. Mussen, of Glenavy, is a candidate. Dr. Mussen is a member of one of the oldest families resident in the county, among the original settlers in the parish of Derriaghy, brought thither by Sir Fulke Conway after he obtained a grant of the property; and from that time till present the Mussens have discharged all the obligations of citizenship with scrupulous fidelity. Dr. Mussen has had a long and extensive practice as Dispensary Doctor in the district, and is eminently qualified professionally to discharge the duties of the important office of coroner. He is a gentleman highly respected by all classes in the community; and he has become a candidate at the request of his numerous friends in all religious and political denominations. Of his return there is not the shadow of a doubt; and this being the case it is believed he will have a walk over; but should there be a contest for the vacant office, the gentry and farmers of the County Antrim will show their attachment to Dr. Mussen by electing him to a position to which he is so well entitled, and for the discharge of the duties of which he is so admirably qualified.

Death of Dr. Hume.

The news of the demise of Dr. Hume will be received with much regret in the district in which he resided for many years and by his numerous friends in other parts of the country. The deceased gentleman was coroner of one of the districts of the County Antrim for a period of some fifteen years, and his discharge of his official duties was marked by great ability and dignity. He had a very extensive practice in his profession, and his many estimable qualities gained for him a widespread popularity. He had been in indifferent health during the past year, and his death was not altogether unexpected. He was in his sixtieth year, and leaves a widow and five children to mourn his loss.

The following is an extract from the Belfast Newsletter dated Wednesday 14th January 1880 and appears with permission of the Belfast Newsletter.

Funeral of Dr. George Alexander Hume – The remains of this highly-respected gentleman were conveyed yesterday from his late residence, Crumlin, for interment in the family burying-ground near that town. The funeral cortege was very large and representative, there being a numerous attendance of clergymen, medical gentlemen, tenant farmers from the surrounding district. The coffin, which was of oak, with massive brass mountings, was placed in the hearse at ten o’clock. The cortege then proceeded to the Presbyterian Church, and on arriving the coffin was borne into the church, where service was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Canning. At the conclusion of the service the coffin was again placed in the hearse and conveyed to the graveyard, where the Rev. Mr. Lyle, Muckamore, officiated. The coffin bore the following inscription: "George Alexander Hume, died 9th January, 1880, aged 60 years."

Full Abstract:
The Will of George Alexander Hume late of Crumlin County Antrim M.D. deceased who died 9 January 1880 at same place was proved at Belfast by the oaths of Christina Oakman Hume Widow Walter Oakman Hume and George Alexander Hume Gentlemen all of Crumlin three of the Executors.

Hunter. William Matthew Hunter , M.B. P. Ch., J.P. Died 8th May 1958 aged 81 years and also Mary Hunter, his wife died 28th May 1958, aged 79 years. Their son Kennedy Hunter died 19th July 1975 aged 67 years. Their daughter Jean Morrison Hunter died 9th July 1981, aged 80 years. Their son James Torrens Hunter died at Capetown 5th August 1971 aged 67 years.

Notes:In 1911 this family were residing in Ballytromery.
William M Hunter age 34 was the local doctor. He resided with his wife Mary age 31 who had been born at Crookedstone, County Antrim. They had 2 children James J. age 6 and Kennedy age 3 years. Lizzie Grant (Born Crumlin) age 15, a Roman Catholic domestic and Nellie Gileson (born Coleraine) aged 38 a Roman Catholic Domestic both resided with the family. Margaret Kearney, a domestic nurse, aged 35 years, born in County Louth also resided with the Hunter family.

Johnstone. In loving memory of William John (Jackie) Williamson died 9th Jan 1991. Always in our hearts. Jane Elizabeth (Betty) Williamson died 5th Sept. 2001. Never forgotten.

Their children Thomas John died 25th July 1950, Martha Alice died 21st January 1956, James Harvey died 6th September 1956 and his wife Martha Jane died 10th February 1973, their daughter Mary Isobel Violet died 30th October 2005.

Notes: In the 1911 census the family resided at Tullyvin, Castleblaney, County Monaghan.
David King age 53, a farmer and his wife Mary age 57 had been married 29 years. They had 6 children of whom all 6 survived. The family had all been born in County Monaghan. Harriet Jane age 21, James Harvey age 18 and Thomas John age 17 all resided with their parents in 1911.

Edmund age 52 a widower and farmer, resided with his family: Howard age 23, John age 21, Anna age 18, Winifred age 15 and a Roman Catholic farm servant Arthur Lavery age 29.

McConnell. In memory of Margaret Gwendolyn (Rita) beloved wife of Robert Nash and fourth daughter of J.H.McConnell died 12th November 1931 aged 37 years. Alice Victoria McConnell beloved daughter of J.H. McConnell Cherryvalley died 3rd February 1944. Good, Kind and True.

Notes: In the 1911 census the McConnell family are listed in Ballymacrevan.
John Henry age 60 was an assistant land commissioner married 3 years to Jane who was born in Scotland. Alice Victoria McConnell age 23 and Marion Florence McConnell age 23 are listed as daughters. Helen Harkness age 16 and Mary Harkness age 14 are listed as Domestic housemaid and domestic cook respectively and reside with the family.

In 1911 he had been married 23 years with 8 children, 7 of whom had survived.
