It wasn’t that long ago an old friend of mine related to me a story from the 1930’s, about an old fellow from the Lurgan area called Charlie. Charlie had taken a notion to learn the violin and had acquired one.

One evening a knock came to the door. He opened it, violin in hand, to find the next door neighbour standing there. “Ach goodness gracious, is that what it is Charlie,” she said. “Do you know what that sounded like in our house? It was like a pig eating cinders!” Of course you had to start somewhere.

In this part of the world the fiddle was one of the most popular instruments played around the countryside many years ago and provided both entertainment and accompaniment to the many socials and dances in homes, barns and halls. Good fiddlers were always in demand.

On April 3 1854, just over six months before the charge of the Light Brigade, Hugh Gordon, a well-known resident of the Ballymacward townland, Stoneyford had passed away and preparations were being made for his funeral to St. Aidan’s Parish Church at Glenavy on April 5.

The story of the Stoneyford violin maker returns to Lisburn in music and song

History will once again be brought to life on Wednesday 2nd December at 7.30pm in the Irish Linen Centre, Lisburn Museum when Michael Costello addresses the December meeting of the Lisburn Historical Society on Hugh Gordon, the local 19th century violin maker.

Born in 1794, Hugh Gordon resided in a cottage in the town land of Ballymacward, Stoneyford.

A local blacksmith and farmer he was once described as “a mechanical genius….who could make anything.” Throughout his life Hugh not only utilised the plough and anvil at the family homestead, but worked with a set of handmade tools and templates and appeared to run a successful cottage industry manufacturing violins.

Most of the materials for these beautiful instruments, such as sycamore and pine, would have been sourced locally. Hugh Gordon stamped each of his violins on the rear, below the button, and a label was put inside.

Michael estimates he may have made as many as 50 violins during his lifetime. Some of these instruments would eventually make their way to various parts of the world including Canada and America. Read more »

New Book launch at Killultagh Historical Society

It is not unusual to discover amongst the advertising columns in the newspapers of yesteryear, a Gordon violin for sale. An example of this can be found in the Belfast Newsletter in January 1877. Almost 23 years after the death of local violin maker Hugh Gordon, one of his masterpieces could be bid on at Mr. Cramsie’s auction house located at 10 Waring Street, Belfast. Amongst the items for auction on that occasion were “…a Klotz violin, a violin (by Gordon), and a small Mathias Neuner violin…”

For over thirty years, Belfast teacher and musician, Michael Costello has been researching the background of Hugh Gordon, a farmer, blacksmith, and amateur violin maker, who resided at Ballymacward, Stoneyford. Michael, who is also the proud owner of several of Gordon’s early nineteenth century violins, recently launched his newly published book titled “Gordon of Stoneyford, Violin Maker” at the February meeting of Killultagh Historical Society.

Malicious Injury to Fence

The following extract is from the Belfast Newsletter dated 2nd June 1899 and appears with permission of the Belfast Newsletter.

Lisburn – the fortnightly court was held yesterday, before Messrs, John Rogers, J.P. (in the chair); Hugh Mack, J.P.; Wm. Savage J.P.; John Laird J.P.; M.B. Mackenzie, M.D., J.P., and George St. George, M.D., J.P…..

Henry Scott, Ballymacward Lower, summoned Thomas Cushnahan, the son of a neighbouring farmer, for maliciously injuring a fence in complainant’s property. Mr. Wilkins appeared for Scott, and Mr. Maginness represented Cushnahan. Their worships fined the defendant 1s and costs.

Valuable fee-simple grazing farms

The following is an extract from The Lisburn Herald dated Saturday 21st January 1911.

Important sale of valuable fee-simple grazing farms at Islandkelly and Lower Ballymacward, near Stoneyford.

We have received instructions from Mr. Geo. Connor to sell by auction at our property mart, 24 Arthur Street, Belfast, on Friday, 10th February, 1911 at one o’clock, the following farms of land :-

Lot 1. Farm situate in the townland of Knockcairn, County Antrim, containing 152 acres 1 rood 2 perches, statute measure or thereabouts held in fee simple, subject to a terminable annuity to the Irish Land Commission, reduced as from 1st May, 1908, to £50 15s 0d, and further reducible.

On this farm there is a good, recently erected dwelling house, containing 2 reception rooms, 5 bedrooms, bathroom (H&C), 2 pantries, kitchen, dairy, &c.; the office houses comprise:- byres for 24 cows, stables for 6 horses, coach-house, boiling house, harness room, stores, fowl-house, and a large Iron hay shed.

Lot 2 farm situate in Knockcairn (adjoining lot 1) containing 97 acres 2 roods 10 perches, statute measure or thereabouts, held in fee-simple, subject to a like terminable annuity, reduced as from 1st November, 1908, to £34 9s 9d, and further reducible. the foregoing lands are of superior quality, extra well watered, drained and fenced. The fields are large and there is easy access from the County Roads.

The lands have been in grass for upwards of 50 years, and are well known as among the best grazing lands in the North of Ireland.

The Knockcairn farms are situate 9 miles from Belfast, 8 from Antrim, and 3 from Crumlin and Glenavy, and the Stoneyford farms are situate 8 miles from Belfast, and 5 from Lisburn.

Death Notice — Margaret McConnell

Theft of Ducks

The following is an extract from the Lisburn Standard dated 23rd March 1917.

Larceny of ducks

Mary Jane McKnight, Ballymacward Lower, summoned a neighbour woman named Sarah Henry for, as alleged, stealing six ducks her property.

From the complainant’s deposition taken at a special court, it appeared that she missed the ducks and suspected that defendant had taken them. She met defendant leaving home with a cart, and challenged her. Defendant said she never saw the ducks, and refused to let her look into the cart. When her daughter, Mrs. Scott, went to look in the cart defendant struck her with a stick. Her son-in-law Beauchamp Scott, came and took up a bag from the cart, and shook two ducks out. He got two more ducks in another bag. Her son-in-law took charge of the horse and cart until witness went for the police. When the police arrived they got the other two ducks in the cart. She had no doubt whatever that the ducks were her property. They were value for about 24s.

The Chairman – Was there anybody else with this woman and her cart on the road?

Witness – No

Mr. Maginess, who appeared for Mrs. McKnight, said that was not the first time she had had trouble with defendant, and she felt compelled to bring her to Court.

Defendant, on being asked had she any questions to ask, said – Her ducks are running wild, and I am tired feeding them. (laughter)

Mr. Maginess – I think she has gone far enough.

The Chairman (addressing defendant) – The value of these ducks is over five shillings, and you will be charged before a judge and jury at Quarter Sessions unless you plead guilty. if you plead guilty the magistrates have the jurisdiction to deal with you.

Defendant – I plead guilty to taking them, but I did not know who owned them.

The Chairman (to complainant)- Are these ducks in the habit of wandering?

Mrs. McKnight – They never left the house before, or I should not have got alarmed so early.

After some consultation with the District-Inspector and his brother magistrates the Chairman (addressing defendant) said – you are convicted of this charge. It is a very mean sort of offence you committed, and you are liable to six months’ imprisonment. The magistrates are going to sentence you to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.

Woods v Dornan

The following extract is from the Lisburn Herald 10th December 1921.

Rates Prosecution.

Adam Woods, rate collector, sued Felix Dornan, Ballymacward Lower, Stoneyford, to recober £11 19s 1d county rates due and owing.

Mr H.A. Maginess, solicitor, appeared to prosecute. Defendant did not appear.

The rate collector having given evidence, a decree for the full amount was made with 20s costs.

Death Notice — David McKnight

The following is a newspaper cutting from an unknown source.

McKnight – January 25 1939 at his residence, Steedstown, Ballymacward, Stoneyford, Lisburn, David McKnight. Funeral tomorrow (Friday) at 2pm to Tullyrusk Burying Ground. Friends will please accept this intimation. Deeply regretted by his loving Granddaughter and Husband Frances and David Portis.

Erected by Thomas and Ralph Maxwell in memory of their parents Ralph Maxwell of Ballymacward died 17th February 1889 aged 86 , Eliza Maxwell died 3rd July 1896 aged 75, Maggie Eliza daughter of above Thomas Maxwell died 23rd August 1887 aged 5. The above Thomas Maxwell born 17th January 1846 died 6th May 1912. Sergeant Thomas Maxwell 15 battalion R.I.R. Ulster Division born 6th May 1889, wounded at the battle of the Somme, France 1st July 1916 died in London 11th August 1916. Interred here with military honours, son of above Ralph Maxwell. The above Ralph Maxwell died 10th may 1918 aged 63 also Lucy Maxwell wife of the above Thomas Maxwell died 11th December 1935 aged 83 years, Jane wife of the above named Ralph Maxwell died 25th January 1949, aged 93 years.

Erected by William Maxwell, Lisburn in memory of his dear children Anna Maria who died 16th May 1887 aged 6 years, William who died 24th April 1887 aged 9 months. Jesus said Suffer little children to come unto me. His father John Maxwell of Ballymacward who died 26th October 1889 aged 62 years. His mother Maria Maxwell who died 14th June 1891 aged 61 years, his beloved son John who died suddenly of Apoplexy in a C.P.R. train near Montreal on 2nd August 1906 on his way home aged 22 years. His remains were interred by “Sons of Portadown” L.O.L. 919 on 7th August in Prospect Cemetery, Toronto. Sadly mourned. “God is His own interpreter and He will make it plain.” Also his beloved wife Martha who died 17th January, 1932.
