Sergeant-Major John H Bell, killed, belonged to Carnaghliss, parish of Killead, where he owned an extensive farm. He served in the Boer War, and was a splendid horseman. His friend, Quartermaster-Sergeant Waring writes:-
"Sergeant Major Bell when wounded although asked to retire by his Captain, refused to do so, and fought on until he was killed by a German shell. His death was a very great grief to the whole company."
